Avanos is located in the historical and touristic region of Cappadocia. This region is characterized by the pottery industry. Avanos is famous throughout the country and abroad for its red clay products made by the locals. The roots of their profession lie in the nearby Red River that flows through the city. Kizilirmak (Red River) is named because of the red mud that lies on its banks.
